Mise-en-scene Stranger Things analysis

Mise-en-scene Stranger Things analysis

Watch the opening of television drama ‘Stranger Things’, a science fiction story set in the 1980s when four friends get wrapped up in a dangerous alternate universe.

Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting and setting) and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation and what is communicated to the audience.

The setting-  The setting is based on a dark environment. it was a quiet and empty hospital with flashing lights. This shows the audience the genre is horror as it sets fear in the audience's mind. one of the scene is a character called Will Byers feeling very scared because he saw a shadowy figure in front of him while coming back from Mike's house and could not find his parents inside as well. This scene was shot in the forest type area which again was very quiet and windy which creates a scary feeling inside the audience's minds.

Lighting-The lighting was dark because the drama is based on a scary setting. For example, the hospital lights kept on flashing which creates a scary environment. Because the lights are flashing, you cant see if something is coming towards the camera and you will be surprised when it will come up onto the camera.

Costume- the costumes are designed to be from the 80's era. The children are wearing casual jeans and sometimes full sleeve shirts. the adults are wearing boot cut jeans and old school clothing. This shows the audience how life looked like in the '80s.
