Sample questions for Advertising and Marketing

1) What year was the advert produced? The product was produced in 1955

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s? Woman were presented as house-wives at that time. 

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and typography promote the product? They have used this slogan because white is known as bright colour and they wrote the title in a big and bold font.

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society? Her role is a housewive because of her clothes and that also suggests that she is happy with this product because she is satisfied with it.

5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert? The picture is there to represent the product.

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert? the colour scheme is bright which connotates that the woman in that time were happy with this product and the colours go with the slogan 'Omo makes white bright'.

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples. 
'Whiteness alone won't do' suggests that other products won't do what this product says.

8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes. This advert shows women as week and can only do roles of housewives this can be suggested by the woman in the advert.

9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955? That woman that time were very week and men were more dominant then woman but now they are equal to woman

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here? Woman were treated the same because the woman used to clean but men used to too.
